THE 6 WEEK PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA COURSE IN ANTIQUE FURNITURE REPAIR AND RESTORATION (JUST THE WOOD WORKING PART)

WE WILL BE RUNNING OUR COURSES AGAIN IN 2015. NEW COURSE DATES AND NEW COURSE FEES WILL BE POSTED SHORTLY. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE INFORMED PERSONALLY AS SOON AS THE COURSE DATES ARE AVAILABLE, PLEASE EMAIL US PROVIDING US WITH YOUR DETAILS AND THE COURSES IN WHICH YOU ARE INTERESTED AND WE WILL EMAIL YOU THE DATES AS SOON AS THEY ARE AVAILABLE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE.

The course is made up of a home study section and a 6 week practical, hands-on section conducted in our workshops at 'The Retreat'. The six individual weeks that make up the course should be chosen from the above dates. This way you can tailor your course to suit the time you have available. For the complete beginner, the 3 week development of tool skills course will be required in preparation for this course. For everybody taking part in this 6 week course a test will be carried out to establish if your tool skills are of a high enough standard. If your tool skills need to be developed further you will need to do the additional 3 week development of hand tool skills course.

You will be taken, step by step, carefully through, in detail, the cabinet repair techniques required to restore antique furniture so that in time you can build your skill to a high professional standard. You are invited to bring suitable pieces of furniture to restore (or we will provide pieces for you). The pieces you bring must be small, a writing or similar box, a chair or table (top size not more than 50cm x 60cm). You are invited to bring any other pieces to the course, these will be looked at during the course and a detailed plan of required restoration work will be made so you can restore the pieces between the weeks of the course, or after the course. Also, we will carefully evaluate the pieces originality, age, construction and the woods from which it is made. These pieces of furniture must be packed back into your vehicle after they have been examined as we do not have the space to store them in the workshop during the course. For those wishing to set up in business, time is set aside to discuss marketing, pricing, quoting, suppliers, set up of workshop and every aspect of how to make your business successful. Peter Thomson is also available by phone or letter to answer any questions during or after your course.

This course, combined with the 3 week Professional Diploma course in Hand Finishing techniques, and if your tool skills need to be developed, the 3 week development of hand tool skills course provides you with most of what you need to know in order to offer the complete professional antique furniture restoration service. Please only bring furniture that we have agreed is suitable.

You will receive plenty of one to one tuition. The atmosphere is enthusiastic yet relaxed and the workshop is spacious, light and warm. Every student has his or her own bench and selection of tools. There is also an extensive range of specialist hand tools. Most of the wood and materials are included in the course fee. You are invited to work at your own pace. Tea and coffee always available. The course runs from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm - Lunch - then from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, with tea breaks at 11:00 am and 4.00pm. Except on Fridays when the course concludes at 4:30pm after lunch.
